When something happens to you and you are not sure why, it can be disconcerting; especially when that problem is occurring within your eyes. There are a number of eye problems that you may experience at some point during the course of your life. Some will cause you no concern, such as finding a speck of dust or an eyelash in your eye. Others will cause you to worry more, such as when your eyes are swollen, red and itchy; this could be an allergic reaction, pink eye or even just a broken blood vessel in the eye. However, there are also things that may happen within your eye that will cause you great concern. Before you head straight to the doctor, make sure what you are experiencing is not just a simple eye floater.
Eye floaters are those things that happen as you age; they become one of those things that could happen to you as you get older. Eye floaters are tiny specks of what appear to be spots, dust or some other little fleck of something that appears in your vision. They can also be spider web-like pieces of what seems like gel that have gotten stuck in your eyes. This is very common. It is caused by the gel like substance in your eye, called vitreous. As you get older, the gel-like vitreous becomes less gel-like and more liquid-like, meaning that it moves and often gets in the sight of your vision. This is typically not a problem and will happen on occasion.
You may notice yourself experiencing eye floaters. This is not something that should concern you when they occasionally interrupt your vision. However, if you notice that your eye floaters are becoming worse, this could be indicative that there is something more serious going on with your vision and you should contact your doctor immediately. There are a few occasions when your eye floaters are more of an eye problem than just being eye floaters.
When your eye floaters increase in regularity, there could be a problem. If your eye floaters begin to increase with regularity and you begin experiencing flashes of light with them, there is absolutely a problem. This is a sign that your retina is detaching from your eye and from your vitreous; this requires immediate medical attention if you want to save your vision and prevent further damage to your eyes.
Additionally, if your eye floaters are occurring regularly and you experience a loss of peripheral vision, this is also an indication that your retina may be detaching from your eye. Again, seeking medical attention is something that should be done immediately. On its own, increasing eye floaters are very likely not a problem that you need to worry about. However, when you feel at all concerned about a medical condition, it is always a safe bet to speak with a medical professional for peace of mind and to ensure that there really is nothing wrong with your vision or eyes.
