Stomach ulcers are also known as peptic ulcers, which are sores that form in the stomach lining. These ulcers may also be found in the intestine or in the esophagus. Most people who suffer from stomach ulcers take medication to relieve some of the uncomfortable symptoms. However, research shows that eating a modified diet may help reduce the discomfort associated with stomach ulcers.
The primary symptoms of stomach ulcers include heartburn, belching, nausea, weight loss and poor appetite. Stomach pain is often worse while the stomach is empty and pain is often relieved by eating. Stomach ulcers are not caused by poor diet, but can be made worse by alcohol use, drinking coffee, smoking and eating spicy foods. Certain people have a higher risk of developing ulcers. Doctors recommend staying away from spicy foods if they cause an increase in stomach pain. Following a stomach ulcer diet that is rich in antioxidants and flavonoids may also help reduce symptoms. Foods in this category include celery, onions, apples, cranberries and tea may help decrease stomach pain. Eating antioxidant rich foods may also lessen the chance of contracting the H.pylori virus, which is a known cause of stomach ulcers and uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms. Consuming foods rich in fiber may help prevent ulcers or decrease the symptoms associated with them. Fiber is found in a wide variety of delicious fruits and vegetables such as apples, bell peppers and spinach. Reduce coffee intake and carbonated beverages such as colas to reduce heartburn often associated with stomach ulcers. Eating foods that contain healthy fats such as olive oil or nuts will also help reduce the effects associated with ulcers. To reduce stomach pain, avoid fatty foods fried in oil or foods high in refined sugar.
Along with a stomach ulcer diet, there are a few nutritional supplements that may help reduce uncomfortable gastrointestinal symptoms. Vitamin C is thought to reduce bleeding of the stomach lining, which is common when peptic ulcers are present. Probiotic supplements are often found in yogurt products or are available at your local vitamin shop. These supplements contain beneficial substances that may help restore balance to the digestive system by increasing the numbers of good bacteria and reducing numbers of harmful bacteria.
If you have been diagnosed with a stomach ulcer, take all medications prescribed by your doctor. Most doctors recommend acid reducing medications, H2 blockers and proton-pump inhibitors to treat stomach ulcers. Combing these medications with a healthy diet may set you on the path to recovery sooner than just taking medications.
