What is a stomach ulcer?
A stomach ulcer is a sore that develops on the lining of the stomach. Stomach ulcers are commonly caused by a bacterium known as helicobacter pylori. This bacterium is normally present in the intestines and usually does not cause any problems. However, it can cause the lining of the stomach to become inflamed, which can lead to an ulcer. The helicobacter pylori is commonly spread through close contact. It can also be spread through contaminated water and food.
People who frequently use Motrin, Advil and other over-the-counter medications are at an increased risk for developing this condition. These medications have a tendency to irritate the lining of the stomach. There are also a number of prescription medications that have been linked to stomach ulcers. Additionally, stress, smoking and drinking alcohol in excess can put a person at risk for developing an ulcer.
What are some of the stomach ulcer symptoms?
Pain is one of the most common stomach ulcer symptoms. This pain may be felt anywhere from the abdomen all the way up to the breast bone. It may also worsen at night or when the stomach is empty. In many cases, the pain may disappear and then come back a few days later. Nausea, vomiting, unexplained weight loss and bloody stool are some of the other common stomach ulcer symptoms. A small number of patients may experience appetite changes.
What are some of the treatments available for stomach ulcers?
People who notice any of the stomach ulcer symptoms should consult with their physician. If this condition is left untreated, it can result in internal bleeding and infection. Both of those complications can be life-threatening.
The treatment that the doctor prescribes depends on the cause of the stomach ulcer. If the ulcer was caused by the helicobacter pylori, the patient will be prescribed antibiotics to kill the bacteria. If the ulcer was not caused by a bacteria, the doctor will usually prescribe a medication from a class called a cytoprotective agent. These medications work by protecting the lining of the stomach. Carafate and Cytotec are two of the most commonly prescribed cytoprotective agents. The doctor may also recommend an over-the-counter medication, such as Pepcid that reduces the amount of stomach acid produced.
What are some of the things that can be done to prevent stomach ulcers?
Because this condition is commonly caused by a bacterial infection, one of the best things that people can do is practice good hygiene. The hands should be washed frequently to avoid spreading infections. It is also important to make sure that one only eats food that has been cooked properly. Additionally, people should also be cautious about using over-the-counter pain relieving medications.
